This is a Bible cognition post, one of four types that I post on this blog. If you aren’t sure what I mean by that, click the picture and read the blog post: What Are You Talking About?
Have you ever been extremely thirsty? Desperately thirsty? So thirsty that you weren’t sure you would ever be able to quench it? Thirst is the brain’s way of notifying you that you are dehydrated. It’s a warning that you don’t have enough fluid. You are lacking something needed.
A person can get so involved in a sport or activity that they don’t realize they are getting dehydrated. Coaches often insist players drink whether they think they need it or not. Staying hydrated prevents decreased performance and the experience of excessive thirst.
We Thirst for God
We experience spiritual thirst.
There are several things which can quench our thirst, spiritually speaking.
Water
Water refreshes. The psalmist says we thirst for God the way a deer pants for water (42:1; 63:1). Jesus said, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink (Jn 7:37). The water Jesus gives becomes a spring of water welling up to eternal life (Jn 4:14). When we believe in him–out of his heart will flow rivers of living water (Jn 7:38). The imagery appears in Revelation as well (7:16-17, 22:17).
Wine
Wine is a symbol of the Spirit. It brings joy and mirth when used responsibly and in moderation. It is the mature product of the fruit of the vine. Jesus is the vine and we are the branches, made mature and kept alive only as we remain in him (Jn 15). Jesus first miracle was turning water into wine. Through the Spirit, he takes our bodies, which are 60% water and makes them holy, sanctified and usable for his glory.
Milk
Milk gives sustenance and strength. Babies require milk. Older persons enjoy it (1 Cor 3:2; Heb 5:13) The Promised Land is often said to be one flowing with milk and honey. Honey refers to what is produced or cultivated from the ground. Milk refers to the product of herds. To say that a land is flowing with milk and honey means it is good for both farming and raising animals.
What does this cost?
Whether you need refreshment, rediscovery of joy or strength and maturity, God can provide it and wants you to have it. And it is free! It is a gift. There’s no price we could afford to pay, and thankfully, it’s already been paid by Jesus, on our behalf.
All we must do is come!
